Well, it's been a while since I've made my last talent scout, and I wanted to wait with a new one until I found a real gem. Moritz Leitner could well be that player, despite only playing in the 2. Bundesliga. And even though I haven't really seen enough of him to make an in-depth analysis of all his strengths and weaknesses, he's convinced me enough in the one game I saw him in. The son of an Austrian mother and German father was born and grew up in Munich, and he's been playing for 1860 München's youth teams since the age of 6. In pre-season, he was allowed to train and play with the first team, and impressed his coach enough to be called up to the first team for this season.

Obviously, he even impressed so much that he was in the starting line-up against in the first game of the season against Bochum, who got relegated last season and are favourites (amongst 5-6 other teams) to get up straight again. Despite losing 2-3, Leitner had an IMO amazing game, he never gave up and fought for every ball, showed good vision and some good dribblings, one of which lead to a goal. He wasn't as impressive in his second game, but again, he pre-assisted a goal.

For highlights from Leitner skip to 1:35 in the first video, where his dribbling and pass led to the assist for the 1-1, and 1:23 in the second one, again a nice dribbling and a good opening pass which lead to a goal.

What I really like about this player is that, despite his skills on the ball, he always seems to have an eye for his team-mates as well in the right moment. He's not the typical selfish playmaker, when he sees a better placed player, he doesn't hesitate to pass the ball on, and he plays that passes at the right time and very precisely. As with most young players, I see his weaknesses in his physical presence, but that will probably change with time, and maybe he can improve his defensive duties a bit.

Another thing that speaks for his immense talent is that he was called up for the German U-19 already, even though he only had an Austrian passport until shortly before his nomination. It doesn't happen very often that the German FA calls up players that would also be eligible for Austria ;)

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

Already had the post ready since Thursday, but decided to wait to publish it until he was added to the DB, so therefore it isn't fully up to date.

Leitner also played in yesterday's match, and gave the assist leading to the 1-0 by Lauth. However, due to a poor defensive performance, 1860 lost the game 1-2 in the end.

I can just repeat myself. The kid really does have something special, else I wouldn't have posted on him :P

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

he's being sarcastic lol ' date=' that was leitner's 1st game , he could easily get injured or benched and not get a rise at all but he's too good to get benched lol.[/quote']

Exactly. He's played in 3 games so far. How is anybody supposed to make a prediction based on that? Especially considering nobody knows when the next changes will be...

I even said in the first post:

Rating: 75

Prediction: none yet

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

Good report Phi, and I am happy to have snapped him up a day before your report, otherwise I'd have had to pay as much as I could. I was having a quick gander on the German second division and looked him up.

Onto my question, what player would you liken him to? He held that ball up in your last clip pretty well despite his wee stature, and that was a fine goal by Benjamin Lauth.

You should have warned about the music?, in the first video. But he did pretty well in that clip, and I'm no expert on German football, but I can imagine the plaudits that he would have garnered if I was watching an episode of MOTD. :)

The other clip was impressive. He does have some confidence, although at the end I noticed the 2 managers/coaches? having a go. I was unconvinced by the guy who went down with his hands on his face.

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

Seems I haven't lost my eye for great talent. After continually impressing for 1860, he was chased by numerous Bundesliga clubs, and he'll announce his new club today. Currently, the hottest candidates to secure his signature are Dortmund and Leverkusen, with slight advantages for BVB. No need to worry about a lack of playing time though, the new contract contains a clause that Leitner will be loaned out back to 1860 again until the end of the 2011/12 season, which should ensure that he keeps on playing regularly and therefore should rise further (after his +2/3 rise that should happen tomorrow or Saturday ;))

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

A short update on him.

After being signed by Dortmund in the winter and now returning from his loan spell at Augsburg (and getting some nice, small rises there in the mean time), he's spent the pre-season with the first team, and I must say, he's really impressed so far in the friendlies I've seen.

Very good vision, some good dribblings, only thing he needs to work on is his 'robustness', for a DM/CM he's often falling too early/easily, which might be ok as an attacking player, but could lead to some dangerous scenes in the defence when the ref doesn't blow his whistle. Generally, there's definitely still some room for improvement on the defensive end, but with a 'destroyer' type next to him like Bender or Kehl it should be more or less negligible.

I'd say, the chances he'll be Sahin's successor in the Dortmund starting XI are pretty good currently, probably 50-50 between him and Gündogan, maybe even a slight advantage for him based on my impressions. If that really happens, his rating could very well go up quite fast in the next 2-3 changes.

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

That's some great information Phil. We shall see soon enough where his place is. :) I would have assumed that he would be loaned out again, but playing well in a few friendlies will account towards his place in the first team. :)

Re: Moritz Leitner - A new hope for 1860 München

I was hoping to see him in action for Dortmund tonight but I missed the first half hour and he was subbed (they only played 30 minute halves). Still, I got to see another new signing, Perisic.
