Manchester United have agreed terms to sign an "outstanding" 15-year-old Norwegian midfielder who is a combination of Lionel Messi and Xavi, a club official has told Goal.com UK.

Mats Moller Daehli told Norwegian Premier League club Stabaek on Monday that he will join United in the next few days for a nominal fee and link up with their academy on February 1.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s team were so keen to sign a player rated as one of the best in his age-group in Europe that, in a rare move, he has already been guaranteed a professional contract by the Premier League giants when he turns 17.

United beat off competition from Bayern Munich, Ajax and a number of Premier League clubs to capture Daehli, who had five trials in Manchester before he was offered a deal last week.

“He has not signed yet but he gave Manchester United the answer a couple of days ago and gave our club the news today,” Stabaek reserve and academy team head coach Morten Tveit told Goal.com UK on Monday night. “He goes into the Academy on 1 February. They wanted him as soon as possible but February was chosen because of his schooling. He will go back to Norway in May/June to finish his studies and return to United in July.

“He has in his contract that he will automatically get a professional contract when he is 17. That is unusual.”

Because Daehli has not yet turned professional, United will not pay a fee for the teenager but have agreed to pay Stabaek €10,000 (£8,626) a year for the entirety of the player’s career and may also contribute funds to the Norwegian club’s academy and that of his previous club, FC Lyn.

“We have done our best to keep him and give him the best project here. But it has been talked about for a long time and I’m not that surprised," Tveit added.

Teenage dream | Daehli is already guaranteed a professional contract when he turns 17

“We have done our best to keep him and give him the best project here. But it has been talked about for a long time and I’m not that surprised.

“We are just happy to send such a good player as Mats to the best club in England. Had it been Leeds [united] or Everton it would have been difficult. Man United is a professional, serious club. You have a lot of Norwegians there like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and we believe it is safe for him."

Tveit says he has no doubts that Daehli can be a major force, even at a club where competition for places is so intense.

“I think he is going to play for the first team and every coach at Man United thinks he will play for the first team,” said the experienced coach. “He is one of the best players in Europe in his age group. He is the best player I have ever seen at his age and I have seen a lot of international players at that age.

“He can play right side, left side, maybe off the main striker. He can be a little bit Messi, a little bit Xavi.

“He is outstanding and can be a complete football player. He has the mentality, the technique, his attitude is very good. He has everything. If he misses something, it is the physical side. He has to be stronger. But he is 15 and that will come.”

United have been tracking Daehli for two years and the teenager has trained with the club on five separate occasions over that period.

“A lot of other clubs have tried to get him,” explained Tveit. “Bayern Munich, Ajax and a number of Premier League clubs but he made up his mind a long time ago. You can’t go training with every club.”

Reserve team manager Solskjaer has been a key figure in enticing his countryman to Old Trafford, where he will link up with three other young Norwegians at the academy, Etzaz Hussain, Joshua King and Magnus Eikrem.

“I have seen the other Norwegian players over there and they will not make it at Man United, that is my opinion,” said Tveit. “Mats is different.”

Re: Mats Moller Daehli - A Little Piece Of Heaven For Man United

Nice right up but i do have a problem with these found a talent threads when certain statements are made without any credible form of source, or even who said it !

Statements such as "a combination of Messi and Xavi"

So in the 10 years ( thats the highest realistic amount of time he would of been playing ) he has developed a new style of play which incorporates two of the best players of our generation ? ( and possibly the best player ever in Messi ).

Give me a break , add to this the fact that Xavi and Messi play totally different positions how on earth can he be play like both of them

Oh wait, iv just read where you got this info from..... goal.com

You may aswell of used Wikipedia.

If indeed he is that good, why on earth has he not had any first team apperances ? Afterall we have seen 15/16 year olds play for first teams, this is only in Norway, the standard is not that high, surely the worlds next Messi / Xavi combo would scrape into the subs bench of a Norwegian outfit ???

Also offering foreign youth players a professional contract is not rare, its almost standard practice ( cant confirm but im 95% sure it is ).

They get a scholarship + 1 or 2 years on a pro contract, depending on how much they are valued.

Solskjaer is also leaving United so i cant see how it will be that much of a enticement for him.

This is a prime example of a lad with a bit of potential being massively over hyped by some horrendous media outlet ( goal.com ) and you , im sorry to say.

Have you got info on any school boy apperances for his country ? Performances during his time at the academy ?

hes only 15, give the player and the guy who wrote this thread a break!

im sure we all know to take comments like the next xavi/messi with a pinch of salt, he looked in the video , for a 15 year old, so lets see how he develops and hold off on criticism until some one actually says something worth criticising.

as for solskjear leaving , as the thread says their are 3 footballers who are a big part of the reserve team at united who could help him settle

if tveits quote at the end is anything to go by, he must be a special talent, as joshua king looks quality!

overall a nice right up on a player with very little information around about him

Yeah he is only 15 thats my point how on earth can he a combo of Messi and Xavi.

If you look at what i say i stated it was a nice right up i just dont like the way alll these threads make out these players are going to be worldclass! Nor did i say he actually doesnt look any good because he does.

I was discussing the lack of quality and reliable sources / stats

Who did i criticise ? The player....no. The poster ..... no, i criticsed the lack of stats and reliable sources, which is fair.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Re: Mats Moller Daehli - A Little Piece Of Heaven For Man United

Mats Møller Dæhli was named MVP in the Val-de-Marne Tournament in France October 26th-30th. Norway played(and lost by 1 goal in all matches, Portugal, France and Holland. Quite impressing for Mats to be MVP, considering that he played on the loosing team and the 3 other countries are famously known for producing young talent!

Mats was discribed as a player with great skills, good teamplayer, good defensivly and a dominating force in attack. From the reviews I've heard of Mats, I think he will be a perfect player for United, and United will be a perfect place for him to develop.

Credit to LouisRocca from RedCafe.net for the info.

Hehe. I bet Everton and Leeds fans are loving that.

Shouldn't this be in 'Found a Talent'?

Re: Riferimento: Re: Mats Moller Daehli - A Little Piece Of Heaven For Man United

Is he worth buying?

It depends what else you can buy/how much money you have but unless you are on a tight budget and are focusing on improving your first team then i'd say he's worth a punt.

I'm not an expert, but he looks to have decent talent and was highly rated by United staff, winning an award for player of the year in the academy.

He's gone to Molde who are the Norwegian champions so he might get the chance to break into their team over the next couple of years. If he managed that then he could reach somewhere around 82-85 most likely depending on minutes/performances.

I had a little browse and you shouldn't take this as hard fact but I heard that he possibly became homesick in England and wanted to return to Norway, but also that he might have a buyback clause enabling United to re sign him if he continues to develop at a good pace.

At the least he looks like he can be a nice little riser if you can pick him up for 250k odd, but he might go further you never know, or maybe he'll disappear off the face of the earth XD

If you can afford it I think it is worth it for such a small amount of money.

Re: Mats Moller Daehli - A Little Piece Of Heaven For Man United

Well, I bought him in several setups, including English Championship 1. :D

I've watched several videos of him on youtube and he seems to be a good all round midfielder, with good vision and skills. The kid is only 18 and obviously NOT the next Messi or Xavi but I think his move to Molde could really benefit him.

Firstly, he's back home in his native Norway where he's familiar with the language, culture and probably has family support. He's at a smaller club than Man Utd, where he actually stands a chance to play some minutes gaining more valuable experience. Molde FK are managed by none other than MAN U legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, so I'm guessing with his contacts at the club, he either has a very good idea how good Daehli is or might turn out to be. There could very well be a buy back clause as part of this deal, after all aged just 18 he has already represented Norway at U23 level and is a U19 regular.

Solskjaer has done exceptionally well the past couple of seasons with Molde and there were rumours that he was wanted by SAF on the MAN Utd coaching staff, but instead he chose to remain in his native Norway. Model are playing CL Qualification again this season so I think this is a great move in the young footballers career.

Remember, VERY few players ever make that big leap from youth squad into a BIG club's first team. Especially Man Utd, who in recent years have been criticized for not giving more youths the opportunity to penetrate into the first team, are no exception. If you look back, talents such as Pique and Pogba have left the club due to lack of opportunities and made a name for themselves (one could even say finding stardom) at other top clubs.

I think for 218k he was worth a punt!! ;)

Hope he does well. :)

Re: Mats Moller Daehli - A Little Piece Of Heaven For Man United

;2654363']what is also interesting is Molde have had on there books 2 other ex Man Utd 'starlets' that never broke through - Magnus Eikrem (who just moved to Holland) & Etzaz Hussain.

Hi JMH,

He never broke through at United but Eikrem did well for Molde and has just signed for Heerenven, which at 21 is just another stepping stone in his career imho.

I think Daehli's decision was fueled by the success of Eikrem, and the way he was nurtured by Ole. Just read that 20 of Molde's 31 strong squad are aged 24 and under so he obviously trusts youth and is happy to give young players a chance.

I agree, I've seen him play for our reserves a few months back and he was very good. Got to speak to Warren, who did say he's a very "grounded & mature" player. He's been brought him very well and has got a fantastic attitude. He's a must buy !
