Rooney. Does it sound familiar? It should. John Rooney is the younger brother of Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney.

The 20 year-old attacking midfielder was selected by the New York Red Bulls as the 25th pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. After impressing at the 2011 MLS Combine, where many young international and collegiate starlets showcased their skills, the Red Bulls decided to fill their need of an AM. Currently, Mehdi Ballouchy is their only other AM, so he will try to compete for a starting job.

MLS insider Simon Borg has predicted that head coach Hans Backe may move Marquez back into a centreback role from his current defensive midfield position, if Rooney proves his worth. He would then form a midfield partnership with 21 year-old midfielder Tony Tchani, which would form a promising young duo for the future.

Rooney came up through the Everton ranks, much like his brother, and then headed over to the Macclesfield Town youth system. In 2008, he secured a spot in the Macclesfield first team and played there until 2010, where he scored 3 goals to his name.

He will now try to showcase his talent in the MLS and remove himself from his brother's shadow. You can purchase him on SM for only 10K, so he should be a no-brainer for any SM squad. He should surely rise from a 68 rating with ease.

UPDATE: 23 September 2011 : John Rooney rose +5 ratings points to 73. Value rose from 10K to 100K. Look forward to bigger things from Rooney come the 2012 season.

Check out his goal at the MLS Combine below, along with an interview.

he has still got to make the final roster cut for the MLS, so he may not be permanent yet.......

Re: John Rooney - Brother of Wayne

I was at the draft as RBNY took 70 fans down to Baltimore to watch the proceedings. Rooney is not going to CB I don't know what Berg is smoking. MLS roster expended to 30 from 24 so unless there is an injury Rooney will make the final roster as Backe rates him. I thought Rooney performed well at the combine as I watched all of the games as well. Backe said he is looking for an international CB as he wasn't able to get one of his targets at the draft. If he doesn't get one Rafa Marquez would probably move to CB. If that was to happen Lindpere and Tchani would be the perferred CM pairing though Norwegian International Jan Gunnar Solli might have something to say about that. Rooney talked to us briefly and he's pretty excited to get started and he thanked us for the warm reception which he wasn't expecting

Re: John Rooney - Brother of Wayne

Really really really really really really... (you get the picture) not worth buying :o He couldn't cut it at Macc Town... a pretty poor League 2 side in England.

I beg to differ. :P

At a value of 10k and an MLS minimum rating of 75, he will surely rise from 68 even if he plays in 1 game.

Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Ian Joyce got a rise from 69 to 75 and he only played in 1 game, literally. All MLS players get boosted up to 75 as long as they are on the senior roster.

Here is a better example: Brian Perk from the LA Galaxy. He was rated 70. He has never even appeared in a MLS game and he went up from 70 to 75 last month.

Re: John Rooney - Brother of Wayne

He should still go up to at least 75 - all MLS players do' date=' even if they never play[/quote']

Yes, 75 is the new minimum, another few appearances and he'll rise to 75. On his current minutes he'll get to around 72 (Kennie Chopart went 60>72 for just 18 minutes in Denmark). Bare in mind the MLS was done pretty recently, so there's a fair amount of time before he's look at again.

Update!

John Rooney with the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to send New York Red Bulls into the next round of the U.S. Open Cup!

Here's a post-game interview with John:

Played alongside the likes of USA national teamers Tim Ream and Juan Agudelo. Certainly a good showing will result in increased chances to play more and more MLS games.

I'll keep you all updated as the season moves along.

John Rooney played 12 minutes in today's Emirates Cup match versus Arsenal. Rooney was on the field whilst Arsenal defender Kyle Bartley put one away in his own net to secure the Emirates Cup trophy for the Red Bulls!

Re: John Rooney - Brother of Wayne

any links to the waiver list?& who Montreal are picking up?

Here is the waiver list link: http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/11/23/players-waived-teams-begin-shape-rosters-2012

Montreal already had their expansion draft picking up some notable players such as Brian Ching, Justin Mapp, Sanna Nyassi, Seth Sinovic, etc. etc.

They recently just signed Bryan Arguez, a former U.S. prospect with tons of upside.
