Napoli News

746.gif Napoli 3 V 2 Bari 97.gif

Napoli start the season with a hard-fought 3-2 win over promotion rivals Bari. All the goals came in the first half, as Bari took the lead on 25 minutes with a strike from Giorgio Di Vicino. Eight minutes later and the score was even again, Massimo Donati equalizing on his debut. Bari immediately hit back with a goal 3 minutes later (36) from Vincenzo Santoruvo. Goals were coming thick and fast, and 2 minutes later on 38 minutes, Christian Bucchi pulled Napoli back on level terms. On the stroke of half time, Bucchi grabbed his second, and what turned out to be the winner on 44 minutes. The second half was fairly dull. One injury for Grandoni on his debut sees him sit out for the next 3 weeks.

Napoli dominated on possession, having 56%, and 21 shots, 14 of which on target, to Bari's 9 on target. Martignetti had this to say:

"I am glad that we have beaten rivals and promotion rivals Bari, this is a big step towards our goal, promotion. I am please with all 4 of my signings, especially captain Donati, who grabbed a goal. I am disappointed that Grandoni got injured, but you can't have everything your way!"

Re: Gold Championship 6

Valencia 5 - 1 Gimnastic

Mestalla Attendance 54,680

A trip to the Mestalla on the first day of the season was always going to be an uphill challenge for unmanaged Gimnastic and this proved to be the case. In the tenth minute of the game the ball was pulled back from the by line to the unmarked Sanchez Joaquin, who finished cleverly. In the 29th minute Valencia doubled their advantage when Fernando Morientes bundled the ball over the line after a scramble in the box. Gimnastic kept pushing forward and their persistance payed off when some good build up play allowed Gil to score and give the visiting side some hope. Their hope was short lived as 12 minutes later, using all his skill, David Villa darted past the defenders and drove the ball past the keeper. 10 minutes from time Valencias short corner was picked up by Roberto Ayala who curled it round the unsighted keeper. 2 minutes from time a right foot curling shot from outside the area by David Albelda glided just inside the far post to give Valencia a fith and rounded off a great start for the club under the management of Bryan Adamson who in an interview after the game said "This was probably the best start I could have hoped for, Gimnastic are a good team but today my players outplayed them. I will take many positives from this game but I am concerned about the lack of chances on goal for my team with only 8 shots on goal, but we took our chances well and we will now focus on our next game".

Tom greenfield's Hamburger SV were held by Hertha Berlin to a 3-3 draw which got Tom greenfield ( Manager ) '30%' Satisfied, " When your a team looking to qualify for the champions league year in year out its very dissapointing going to other teams grounds and getting only a point.," Ok i suppose we were away and a point away is a good thing but we will want this against the likes of Bayern munich and leverkusen and the lieks of Werder Bremen". Tom also reveals that he feels his side are confident to do 'well' in this years Champions Cup." When you look at our matches on paper you'd think ... " The odd goal or two is important to us, if we draw at their place ( Mestalla ) I'd be vey happy for the fact they are one of the world's best teams.

Coventry City 0 - 0 Southampton

Coventrys opener failed to produce anything along the lines of an exciting start to the season, but a point nonetheless a better start than losing. New signings to city Sahin Selcuk and Sebastian Larsson will prove worthwhile additions to the team after solid debuts. On 49minutes Khaliliou Fadiga's long shot smashed off the bar which was the closest either side came to a goal.

Espanyol 1-4 Valencia

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys - 54,870

Valencia moved top of the league on goal difference after a good victory over Espanyol but the Spanish giants were hardly out of the dressing room when they gifted Espanyol the opening goal when Canizares fumbled and gifted Moises with an easy chance. When Villa was given too much space 10 yards out there was only one outcome, he finished the chance for his second of the season. Valencia were fortunate when Edus shot from an acute angle was deflected into the goal. The Espanyol defence were asleep for Valencias third when Ayala casually rolled the ball into the net. With 89 minutes on the clock Morientes thumped a low drive from 20 yards out two keepers couldn't have stopped it. Valencia manager Bryan Adamson said after the match " With back to back wins the high morale around the club. With a big club like this there is always high expectations and hopefully we will continue this form into our next game against Zaragoza"

Shakthar Donetsk

shakhtar_donetsk.jpg

Shaktharbegan there season with a home game with Illchivets, a game where they would have expected to leave with 3 points, however, this was not to be the case. a very drab game in all, with the home side having more chances as you would expect, but possession was very even throughout, and it didnt help Shakthars cause as Tomas Hubschman was sent off for a head butt, as early as the 33rd minute. Jansen, Stovini and Suazo all had solid enough debuts.

for their second game, fernandinho came in as a 3rd CB, with Hubschman suspended. was an early contender for clash of the season, as 2 title faves locked horns here, CSKA Moscow and Shakthar. a game filled with chances, with more than 40 efforts in the game, a very evenly contested one, but it was to be the visitors who would leave with all 3 points, after zvonimir vukic scored the winner after only 19mins. Stovini though, did pick up a slight knock, and will miss the next 2 games, to add to their defensive casualties.

Re: Gold Championship 6

Valencia 0 - 0 Barcelona

The much anticipated game between Valencia and Barcelona didn't live up to the expectation and hype it was given as the match ended in a nil-nil draw. The best chances of the game fell to Barcelona with Ronaldinho hitting the post and some good saves from Canizares kept Valencia in the game. Valencia now sit in third place in the league table two points behind Danny Williams's Zaragoza but with only five games played there is plenty of time for Valencia to catch up.
