HANDS OF GOD

Courtois wins the playoff final penalty shootout for Aston Villa!

hog.png

After seasons of struggle in the Championship, the tide has finally turned tonight for Aston Villa. 90,000 filled the stadium to watch Villa take on Crewe Alexandra a club where Villa recently sent Paco Alcacer and Phil Jagielka to in exchange for Kurt Zouma. Many in the Villa end were restless yet expectant. Recent additions of Diego Costa, Rafael + exceptional progress of young stars Sterling, Lucas, and Marquinhos gave a feeling of confidence throughout the season.

Right from the off Crewe had a plan to attack this Villa side, thinking and knowing any other approach may well prove disastrous. And Villa had Courtois to thank as he palmed Kalas volley away for the corner just 47 seconds into the game. And suddenly 20 minutes in, Villa's fans must have been thinking here we go again, the nearly men of English football are here to bottle it again, as Aaron Ramsey crossed the ball towards the penalty spot where Villa's one time prodigy Paco Alcacer connected with a looping header and dipped over the outstretched hands of Villa's number 1.

A nightmare scenario 20 minutes in, as Crewe fans began singing, "we are going up, we are going up"!

Frozy asked his team to recollect themselves immediately, and just 5 minutes later Ramires played through a peach of a ball towards advancing Dries Mertens who took it into his stride and placed it cooly in the bottom corner to make it all square again.

The remaining of the game was played out cautiously by both teams, knowing that attack vs attack may well end up badly for either side, and Villa began playing more physically, booking Mertens, Belhanda, and De Jong for strong challenges. Second half saw both teams pushing for the winner as both sides began to feel their legs heavy playing their second match in 3 days. Both Thibaut Courtois and Antonio Mirante did their upmost to deny opposition strikers any sort of chance to win it for their side.

And in 84th minute, Villa's hearts were in their mouths as a free kick was awarded to Crewe on the edge of the area. Podolski lifted it in to the crowded box and Paco Alcacer rose highest to connect with what looked to be the winner until Courtois acrobatically tipped the ball away much to disbelief to all Crewe players who were all certain it was going in and almost began celebrating.

90 minutes were up and it was to be decided by of the two main stars of the night. Courtois or Mirante, as the game moved to the lottery of penalty kicks.

Sterling scored for Villa and Paco Alcacer stepped up for Crewe, and posibly disheartened from his earlier denied header, shot it straight at the path of calm Courtois to give Villa the advantage. It was now Diego Costas chance to put Villa 2 ahead, but instead he added to the suspense as he blasted the shot to the middle and Mirante saved it with ease. Ramsey, Belhanda, Podolski, Pedro, Quintero, Ramires and Corgnet all converted their spot kicks to make it 4-4.

Up stepped Lucas Moura, with the biggest penalty kick of his life. A sudden death in front of 90'000 loud. A roar erupted from the Villa end, as the ball crept in of the post, and it was now up to Courtois to win it for Villa in sudden death. Jorginho stepped up for Crewe and tried to place it in the top corner, but an outstretched arms of Courtois saw the ball bounce back, to send Villa fans and players wild in celebration.

Diego Costa and Kurt Zouma celebrate Wembley success

Villa.TV caught up with a few players and manager Frozy after the game:

Costa:

It's amazing feeling. I'm very happy. I thank god and manager

Courtois:

It's what we've worked for all year. This moment right here. The staff, the players, the fans. They all knew what we're working on, what the final goal is, and let me tell you, it's not this promotion. There's more to come.

Zouma:

I only today found out that Frozy picked me ahead of Serge(Aurier). I wanted to repay that confidence not only to play me on such occasion but to sign me here and give me an opportunity to play in the Premierleague.

Lucas:

I can't wait to show the world what I can do in the Premierleague next season. Feeling so blessed and thankful.

Sneijder:

This here, don't come through one good game, it's a patient process. It took seasons of hard work and dedication for me to be here again. To be in the promised land. I am truly thankful to my team mates my manager and all the fans for making this the best club in the world. I will never leave. My heart is claret and blue.

Frozy:

This is for the fans who believed. This is for the critics who said we will not do it. English football has evolved so much, that to win any trophy or promotion should be seen as an extraordinary achievement. So many team today has got teams capable of beating one another on any given day, so I feel it's often a roll of the dice as much as your passion and commitment to the cause. I want to congratulate Noisy. He gave me a fantastic tactical game, and I respect him and his team. Similar to Nico and Swindon they've exceeded expectations this season just to finish in top 6 and this adds to my point that no matter how big or small, you can never count your chickens in English football. I'll see you guys in the Premierleague next season, where we will go again from day 1. Thank you

Re: English Championship 7777 - Discussion Thread

Crewe remain in Division 2 next season after the heartbreak of a penalty shootout defeat to Aston Villa at Wembley.

Crewe started the better of the teams and Ex-Villian Alcacer gave us the dream start putting us 1-0 up.

Villa battled back and levelled before both teams played out a tight game and we thought we had won it when Alcacer rose to head at goal but Courtois made the save.

Villa won 5-4 on pens and take there place in Division 1.

I'm not sure it's actually a bad thing Crewe will remain in Division 2 as I don't feel our squad is at the standard required for the top flight just yet.

Delighted for you Scrooll. It was a close run-in (im Tamworth).

Gutted that we didnt make it into the playoffs especially as its our inferior goal difference being the problem.

We've signed some strong players throughout the season, most notabally being Alexandre Lacazette and im hoping we can make a push for the promotion next season.

Russia's Team Coach at this mornings press conference

Today Russia's National Team Manager, Nicholas Fursse, who also manages Swindon Town in his spare time as well as being a professional beer taster, stunt double and international porn star, finally announced his 23-man squad that will represent Russia at the EC7777 World Cup tournament due to start this Thursday, 5th March 2015 at 8pm (after Eastenders).

Russia, who will begin their campaign with a tough opening match against one of the tournament favourites, Argentina, have been drawn in Group F along with Slovenia & the Czech Republic and will see out their qualifying fixtures at Elland Road, home to the mighty Leeds United.

.... it is a tough group, especially drawn with Argentina whom I fancy to go far in the competition what with the MaoaM/Carlos Tevez partnership. I am happy that we will play them first so we know what we have to do to get out of the group afterwards...

Fursse has had quite a headache with his team selection considering the high number of injuries and suspensions. Sergey Ignashevich & Georgi Schennikov are both ruled out of the match against Argentina due to suspension and first choice central defender, Vasili Berezutsky will miss the entire competition through injury.

Winger Alexsandr Samedov is also sidelined with a pulled calf muscle and Plymouth's Viktor Faizulin is doubtful with a twisted ankle. This means that Yuri Gazinksky & Swindon's own 22 year old midfielder, Pavel Mogilevets, receive a surprise call up to the national team.

The 23 man squad has been named as follows: -

GOALKEEPERS

Igor Akinfeev - 91

Yuri Lodygin - 88

Artem Rebrov - 85

It is widely expected that Akinfeev will maintain his place as first choice GK. Tottenham's experienced No.1 rarely put a foot wrong during the qualifing stages. Spartak's Artem Rebrov gets the nod ahead of Belenov as 3rd choice GK.

DEFENDERS

Dmitri Kombarov - 89

Yuri Zhirkov - 88

Georgi Shennikov - 88 (suspended for first game)

Evgeny Makeev - 87

Igor Smolnikov - 87

Vladimir Granat - 87

Andrey Semenov - 84

Sergey Ignashevich - 88 (suspended for first game)

Sergey Parshivlyuk - 87

Makeev & Granat are expected to cover for the missing Ignashevich/Berezutsky, who would normally be first choice. Ex-Swindon defender, Andrey Semenov, gets a surprise call up.

MIDFIELD

Igor Denisov - 90 (Team Captain)

Roman Shirokov - 90

Denis Glushakov - 89

Magomed Ozdoev - 85

Yuri Gazinksky - 85

Pavel Mogilevets - 83

Alan Dzagoev - 90

Oleg Shatov - 88

Surprising inclusion of Yuri Gazinksky & Pavel Mogilevets.

FOWARDS

Aleksandr Kokorin - 89

Aleksey Ionov - 87

Artem Dzyuba - 87

No room for Kherzhakov with the Manager sticking to his preferred front men of Dzyuba & Kokorin.

Newport County beat Stockport County 3 - 0 in the final to lift the trophy.

Charles scored a brace and was later voted Man of the Match for his performance.

Matias was also on the scoresheet for his side.

I still don't believe it!! Newport are on the way to Div3!! After loosing the playoff final last season, we were back this time but with success!

Season 9 - 5th in Div4 - got promoted!

Season 8 - 5th in Div4 - lost playoff final

Season 7 - 1st in Div5

Season 6 - 7th in Div5

Season 5 - 24th in Div5

Congratulations to Chris and his Stockport for the excellent campaign, could have gone both sides! Good luck for the next season.

Congrats to Villa' date=' Oxford, [b']Newport[/b] & Rotherham and commiserations to Crewe, Carlisle, Stockport & Dagenham.

Thanks man!

Blackpool celebrate historic double!!!

Blackpool fans and players celebrated late into the early hours of this morning after winning there first ever double after a 3-1 win in the Europa League final against Arsenal. This goes with the English Shield the club won at the end of January.

Blackpool players celebrate Iniestas 87th minute goal infront of fans!

Arsenal manager Pip was suspended for the game so the Gunners had to rely on there assistant manager. They took an early lead through Player of the Season Neymar. In the 14th minute Iniesta equalised with a fantastic strike into the top corner. Enzo Perez gave the Tangerines the lead just after the half hour mark, with his strike going in off the post. The game could have been over moments later when Tevez found the back of the net, only to be ruled offside. It was a nervy final 10 minutes but an 87th minute goal from Iniesta sealed the win and sent the fans into party mode.

el_trophy.jpg

(Blackpools seventh trophy in eight seasons! Along with four runner up medals)

Carlos tevez won the golden boot for the competition with 8 goals and had the most MOM awards (4), while Adriano had the most assists with 7 (With two in the final).

"This is an amazing season for us. We were very dissapointed not to be in the Champions League this season and next season but this has made up for that. My team mates have been very good all season and this squad continues to get stronger. It is an honour to captain this time and to be lifting titles again. We will celebrate this for as long as possible before the new season and next year will do everything to defend our titles, and hopefully add the English Cup as its the only trophy we have failed to win!"

- Blackpool Captain Carlos Tevez.

Looking forward to next season already. Have to get back into the Champions League and this will be a huge priority so hopefully will be able to make a big signing before seasons begins to move up the league. Also want that English Cup just so I have won everything so we will be going full strength in that competition :P

World Cup starts tonight and Russia's preparations are now complete. Hopefully Carlos Tevez will still be suffering from a hangover after last nights win in the Europa League as we have had to put out a bit of a makeshift defense for our opener against Argentina.

Defender Evgeniy Makeev will get his first international cap tonight. A big game for him to make his debut but we don't have too many options & he has impressed as much as anyone else during our training sessions.

Alan Dzagoev will take his usual role as playmaker, with everything to go through him. The creative midfielder plies his trade for Leeds Utd so playing at Elland Road will be just like another home game for him.

As expected Igor Denisov will lead out the Russian team with instructions to hold our midfield together and provide some defensive cover. Denisov is also no stranger to Elland Road having been a previous Leeds player.

At each end of our formation will be the Tottenham duo of Akinfeev & Kokorin. Expecting big things from these two if we are to take anything from the South Americans....

This morning I received a nice telegram from the Kremlin...

не вкручивай это вверх

Nothing like a few words of encouragement is there?

Russia lost 6 - 2 to Argentina in a thrilling SMFA World Cup Group F encounter.

Not the result I wanted but a great entertaining match all the same. Russia managed to hold their own right up until the half time whistle having even taken the lead at one stage. However, Higuain was simply world class and when you have Lionel Messi scoring glorious free kicks from 30 yards and tearing your weakened defense apart the final score was inevitable I suppose.

I would have preferred to keep the scoreline down a bit though in case it all comes down to goal difference but well done to the Argentines. Nothing I saw last night makes me change my mind about the chance the South Americans have of winning the tournament.

All is not lost though, it is only the first game and it was always going to be a tough one. Tonight we have to put that result behind us and lift our game to beat the Czech Republic, something I believe this team is more than capable of.

We will have a full squad available now so, defensively, we will be back to normal strength. Evgeni Makeev put in a good debut performance under the circumstances but whether he keeps his place is a decision I have yet to make. There will certainly be some other changes made before the players walk out on the pitch again thats for sure.

The match ended 1 - 1 between Russia and Czech Republic in their SMFA World Cup Group F fixture

A much better performance against the Czechs although they gave as good as they got too. Akinfeev took MOTM after making some crucial saves, a big contrast to his nightmare against Argentina.

Slovenia managed a draw against the Argentinians, which isn't a good result for Russia because it means we have to win our last match by a large margin to have a hope of getting through.

We will give it our best shot though and hope for the two things that we will almost certainly need if we are to keep our World Cup hopes alive.....
