Roberto Baggio... try youtube world cup final 1994 penalty shootout, he missed the penalty that led to Brazil winning the world cup, unreal player though.

Batistuta, again mid 90's era... played in Italy, scored lots of goals.

Does Giggs not deserve higher or same as Zola? I know internationally he didnt have success but he's won everything at club level

Re: Retired/Older Player ratings at their peak...

funnily enough i still have turn papers from propa back in the day M&E Sports Pure Fantasy Football.. they use 2 get posted to houses as internet wasnt about then..

basically wot this game stems from imo..

there at my old mans and next time im there if i remember ill get them up..

all from the eras you are speaking of player wise as i played that game for years.. obv not pele, cryuf etc..

ahhhhhhhhhhhh.. the days of not just signing players on rating buts also positional ratings aswell!!!!!..

and the game was now wot 10+ year later and they managed to sub injured players for next best suited available player off your bench!!!..

sm is better though deffinately.. but M&E is the base of this soccer manager period!!!..

Re: Retired/Older Player ratings at their peak...

p.s.. yous forgot romario and stoichkov!!!..

they wo awsome on these games going back in time..

p.s batistuta use 2 score for fun on M&E..

also my claim to fame if anybody use 2 play these style games prior where you had 2 send clipings in 2 get players on game.. from world soccer.. world cup addition books etc.. had to do the player scouting to get them on your self..

i managed to get a chilavert on at same time as the other only spelt chillavert and he was 94 rated as apose to the original being 93 :D ..

we always use 2 make fake clipings of like photocopied players up and get them on the game.. they looked so legit!!!..

Re: Retired/Older Player ratings at their peak...

I see Bergkamp rated higher than Cruyff by some, LOL!

If we'd compare them I'd say Cruyff was 99 and Bergkamp was 95. But when you put them in their own time and at their own moments I'd say Cruyff 99 and Bergkamp 97/98. But Bergkamp seriously was not better than Cruyff at his best  (there was a reason Cruyff was elected as best European player of the century right?)

And btw let's not forget players like Marco van Basten, Johan Neeskens and Willem van Hanegem who would've all been worth at least 97 and probably higher.

Re: Retired/Older Player ratings at their peak...

Some people's ratings on ex players are ridiculousy high, Im not old enough to rate Cruyff, Maradona and Pele as i have never seen them play and i imagine most people on this thread have'nt, anyway from players i do know, Zidane has got to be the best from all players listed from last 20 years and i think a 98 at his peak would have been justified, but although Bergkamp was a wonderfully gifted player how can people be rating him 97? He never scored 30+ goals a season like Henry, he never won a Champions League and correct me if im wrong but he did'nt like flying so rarely played in Europe.

And some people talking about Cantona in the same breath as players like Zidane, Maradona and Pele must be joking saying he would have been rated the same as greats like that.

The bar is set by Messi in the current generation and he is the best player i have seen in my lifetime, the closest two players i have seen to Messi have been Zidane(completely different player) he was amazingly technical player with great strength, vision and eye for goal, and the other player was the real Ronaldo the brazilian Ronaldo, now what a finisher he was, two step overs a shimmy GOALLLLLLLLLLLL, players new what was coming but they could never stop it he just glided past them like they were'nt there. The best defender i have seen has to be Paulo Maldini by a country mile and he has broke all kinds of records at Milan, and even though im a Manchester City fan, the best goalkeeper i've seen has to go to Peter Schmeichel he was such a big prescence, towering and very vocal to his back four, i imagine bearing down on goal with the ball and him stood there spreading himself would have been a scary sight and almost scared strikers in too missing.

I remember when i was young my Grandad use to always tell me about a striker called Gerd Muller he always said he was a great player so quite suprised none of the older forumers have mentioned him.

Anyway as i find myself rambling on a bit i would like to say what a good idea for a thread you have kept me occupied for fifteen minutes reading this.

Thanks :) Whilst Cantona may not have been a 99 or 98, you can't under estimate how important he was to utd, he was a genius, they won the league every year he was there except for the crystal palace incident... He was an unreal player, plus the fact that Fergie took a gamble on signing him
