negredo.jpg

Alvaro Negredo hasnt been on the best of form goalscoring wise in recent weeks however still is the clubs most consistant Preformer. his lack of goals in recent games is being blamed on the on-going news of the world phone hacking Scandel which is said to have interfierd with parts of Negredo's Private life during the period of time where he was transfered to Leeds from Sevilla.

Preston Back To Winning Ways

PNE 3-1 Portsmouth

PNEvsPompey2.jpg

After a 2-1 defeat away at Palace, Preston fans were surely hoping for a win here tonight against fellow 'P'ers Portsmouth to send them back into the mix for a play off place which could eventually result in atleast one season in the promise land of the premiership. Though they were soon hiding their face in their hands, when Popmey took the lead after just 2 minutes through Luigi Bruins who finished off a blistering run to slot home for his side.

It wasen't long before Preston were showing signs of a fight back, just two minutes after the opener, lillywhites midfielder Joey Barton struck with venom only to see his attempt parmed away by pompey keeper Hugo Ventura. Preston did get back level just twenty minutes later though through Chili international Fabian Orellana who somehow tricked the ref into thinking he was onside before taking advantage of the dubious decision by slotting home. Now 1-1 and all to play for going into half time.

The game was stalemate with just 10 minutes left, though Souza Eder didn't like the thought of that so indeed put matters into his own hands, trying his luck from 35 yards out only for Ventura in the pompey net to let the ball slide under his out stretching arms and in. Definately not one for him to watch back that night, though that wasen't the last of his sloppy antics tonight. Just 5 minutes after Preston's 2nd, he did it again though this one was surely more embarassing as Tottenham loanee Danny Rose's chipped attempt seemed to be heading straight into his arms, only for the young Portugese keeper to fumble it and hand Preston all three points late on.

Ben Newman

To be honest I think a draw would have been a fair result, though I can't take it away from the lads as they certainly work their socks off tonight. With this said I would like to let the pompey keeper know that he need's to ignore the press tommorow morning and fully focus on the next match. Little mistakes such as the one's he made tonight are just blips along the way to glory, he's a very young man and I wish him all the best with the future. I'm sure he will get his Portugal international cap pretty soon.

Preston Shock Boro'

Middlesbrough 0-2 PNE

PrestonvsMiddlesbrough-1.jpg

Ashley Duffy's Middlesbrough had been on superb form before the welcome of Preston. Though Newman's men where high in confidence after a 3-1 home win against Portsmouth the previous Wednesday and it started off pretty well here, just 16 minutes on the clock when Joey Barton fluffed his shot wide of the far post. It wasen't very dangerous for Sergio Romero in the Boro' net but it was surely a sign of things to come.

The sign's of the all important opener were shortly put to bed when Preston did take the lead through their very own man on form Fabian Orellana, who's shot curled in off the far post a cheeky left footed shot from the wing. The Chilian had once again showed why Preston bought him at the start of the season by putting in his 4th goal in 6 games for the lillywhites. Though the home side nearly got back into the game three minutes after PNE's goal if Allan Mcgregor haden't pulled off a sublime save at his near post from a Sergio Romer effort.

The game was sealed though half way through the second half when lillywhites captain Joey Barton used some superb technique to curl home the ball and sent the Preston fans into raptures. Surely no way back now, if there was it would have to be a very significant turn around. It wasen't to be though and Preston came away with all three points plus their second win on the bounce.

Ben Newman

I feel that tonight was our best performance of the season despite us only scoring two goals. It's the fact that the lads wore their hearts on their sleeves to beat a very difficult Middlesbrough side, what makes it more special is that it's away from home and they had more fans behing them. Though I would like to give a big shout out to our fans who have made the trip down from little Lancashire to be here tonight and cheer the lads on. All the best on the way home and keep up the good support. Without you we would be nowhere near the top six.

Out Of The Shield!

PNE 2-4 Northampton Town

PrestonvsNorthampton-1.jpg

When the draw for the first round of the shield was made, it became clear that friendly rivals Ben Newman and Elton would be facing off at Deepdale for a place in the 2nd round. Though a place in the 2nd round was not the only thing at steak here, there was also the pride and bragging rights for whoever managed to win the tie. For month's now the two have been waiting to face off and their wishes finally came true, the question was, who would be the one with the massive grin on their face come the end of the night?

The game kicked off with Preston in cruise control and they almost opened the scoring, Darrell Russel's shot cleared off the line by Cobblers loanee defender Jorge Casado who managed to beat the ball to the back of the net and keeping his team level after just 25 seconds. So far this season, Preston have shockingly made their way up the table after being tipped as one of the favourites for relegation and they took the lead over a side the pundits favoured them to be playing next season when a curling Takuya Takei attempt found it's way to the top right hand corner. Though there was nothing quality about Town's equaliser, a tap in from Sergio Tejera after the ball came bouncing back off the crossbar. Still quality in these type of matches means nothing and to the cobblers this goal meant everything to getting them back into the game, now 1-1 and everything to play for.

Northampton's second however was sheer class and it left the Preston defence stood with their heads hung low after a space free Andrey Tikhonov was left to simply nod the ball home from and inch perfect cross from the right hand side. Preston needed a rest and luckily for them the half time whistle went with less than happy Preston fans booing their team off the pitch. Though all Newman could do was clap as he went down the tunnel and hope for the best come the second half. Though by the time the lillywhites manager had managed to sit back down in the dugout, his team were already 3-1 down. That man again Tejera rushing through the defence to slot past an unwary McGregor in the Preston net to give his side a compfy lead, they already had there sights set on the draw for the 2nd round.

Just 4 minutes later though, Preston were back in it thanks to a second goal of the game from Japanese wonder man Takei who finally found himself compfortable with heading the ball home. The game was certainly not over yet and sights of that 2nd round draw were all of sudden disapearing from the cobblers, could they hold on or would they push forward to extend there lead and definately secure themselves a place in the next round? Extend the lead they did through Italian forward Simone Del Nero who kept his head held high and showed great composure to definately hand his side the win and that all important spot in the 2nd round.
Ben Newman

Obviously it was disapointing to lose tonight especially to a rival such as Elton, though it's all just a bit of banter and I wish him and his side the best of luck in the next round. Though all is not bad for me and my team as now we have more time to focus on maintaining a decent league position, just as any other manager would when it came to their side. A loss is a loss at the end of the day though but I thought we showed something we haven't shown all season, that being composure and confidence. No matter if you win a game or not, if you don't keep these two things up then you'll get no where in football. The pundits have been the culprits in this, they predicted the lads relegation to league one and at this moment in time were proving them wrong, which is a proud factor when it comes to being boss of my local side.

The White Rose Prevails

PNE 1-2 Barnsley

PrestonvsBarnsley-1-1.png

When fierce rivals from Lancashire and Yorkshire meet there is only ever one outcome. Victory or nothing, whether it be the red rose of Preston or Blackpool or the white rose of Barnsley or Doncaster, each team from across the two countys try there best to come out on top of the other. Infact Preston have already met Sheffield United this season, another team representing the Yorkshire side of the rivalry. Unfortunately Preston came out 2-1 losers that night but they looked to take vengeance here at home to Barnsley on a cold Wednesday night. Just the type of conditions our founding fathers went through way back in 1455.

Daniel Sturridge impressed in his loan spell at Bolton last year and it looked as if he would be heading back there this season, but a close bond between Haris Maulana and Chelsea gaffer John Allback has seen the Londoner swap the red side of the rivalry for the white side as he completed a controversial loan move to Barnsley earlier in the season and the young English man showed why he had so much interest in him with just under 40 minutes gone. The ball came in from the left hand side only for the loanee to thunder in an over head kick to score his 4th goal in only his second game for the Yorkshire based team.

Despite the 15 minute break at half time, Preston came back out carrying on were they left off, blocking shots were they could to stop Barnsley going 2-0 up. Maybe it was a shock to most people when Preston levelled then, Mario Mandzukic hitting the ball with venom into the roof of the net to give his side an all important equaliser and give Lancashire a lifeline in the battle of the roses. Speaking of Roses, Tottenham loan star Danny Rose nearly gave Preston a 2-1 lead just 30 seconds after the re-start had the 20 year old challenged Sirigu in the Barnsley net with his tame attempt.

Though it just wasen't to be Preston's night as that man again Sturridge was to steal all three points from right under Preston's noses when he turned and quickly fired a low shot in the bottom corner. Now 4 goals in 2 games for Daniel, a record that could see Barnsley shoot up the table if this sort of form carrys on. Chance after chance, Preston could have nicked a point, but it just wasen't to be for the men from Lancashire who suffered their second loss in a row after the 4-2 home loss to Northampton in the English shield. Is this just a phase for the lillywhites or will it become a regular thing?

Ben Newman

I'm very, very disapointed with tonight's result! We had atleast 10 more shots than Barnsley so a point atleast would have been fair. Still as I always say, onwards and upwards. We just need to look forward to the trip to Doncaster and try and get three points for Lancashire there, I feel as the manager I should be taking full responsibility for my sides performances whether we win or lose, hopefully I'll be more cheerful after Donny game on Saturday.

Red Rose On Top!

Doncaster 0-3 PNE

DannyRose.png

Danny Rose ironically scored the second goal of the game in the battle of the roses!

On a cold night at the Keepmoat stadium, Preston managed to pick up a 3-0 away win over Yorkshire opposition in Doncaster Rovers. The whites opened the scoring through a powerful right footed shot from break through full back Conor Mclaughlin, who in recent weeks has seen a lot more game time than he expected at the start of the season, especially at the oung age of 19. A simple header was enough to hand Danny Rose his second goal in a Preston shirt and to double his side's lead just four minutes after the opener, now 2-0 heading into half time. Sure enough it wasen't long after the break that the game was well and truly hand all three points to the lillywhites. Skipper Joey Barton adding yet another goal to his Preston tally for the season, though this goal was to be the last of the game and the last of an entertaining game of football on a chilly Saturday night.
Ben Newman

I'm very proud of the performance the lads put in tonight. They showed great composure and finished off neatly to take away all three points. Though the lads can now go and celebrate, we still have to focus on the next game against Gillingham in the cup. Though this doesn't mean we can't enjoy the moment, so I will be giving the lads tommorow off no matter how risky it is. The team definately deserves a decent night and a good lie in to recover from any stress they have been under so far this season.

Cup Success For The Whites

Gillingham 1-3 PNE

DannyMayor.jpg

Young Lillywhite Danny Mayor showed what he can do by bagging a goal here tonight

On the back of a 3-0 away win at Doncaster, Preston faced an away trip to league 2 side Gillingham to fight for their place in the third round of the Carling Cup. On paper this was a game that should be swinging in the lillywhites favour and it wasen't long before they did actually take the lead. A mix up in the Gillingham defence allowed Northern Ireland international Conor Mclaughlin to run through and slot the ball home. A second goal in two games for the nineteen year old. Though the lead didn't last long for Preston as just two minutes after the opener, they found themselves level pegging. Former Atletico Madrid midfielder Nacho Cases' shot taking a wicked deflection before finding it's way into the back of the net, but the Spaniard did take full credit of the goal. Now 1-1 and everything to play with 40 minutes of the first half remaining.

Though the men in white were to re take the lead in the 22nd minute. This time Preston born Jamie Proctor was the scorer. His header diverted in from a terrific cross by fellow goalscorer Conor Mclaughlin, who had led Newman's side out as captain in this game and with a goal and an assist to his name, you can see why he was chosen to put on the exclusive armband. Still, Preston were now in the drivers seat with all guns blazing heading into half time. However the first half was not just a fluke for the Lillywhites as they continued to pile the pressure on the Gills in search of a third goal that would surely wrap up the game. In the 77th minute it became clear that the search was over and that Preston had got that all important two goal cussion, though scrambling the ball in from such a distance may not be the right term to use here, though Danny Mayor didn't seem to mind taking advantage of a weak Gillingham back line. However lucky the goal was, it was enough to see Preston through to the draw for the next round.
Ben Newman

A well deserved result for a well deserved result here tonight for the lads and to be in the next round of the draw makes it even more sweeter. Though you have to hand it to Gillingham. Normally when a side goes behind so early on it's hard to recover from but in this case they came back fighting and went on to get a quick fire equaliser with their first shot of the game which is something a majority of teams in the premier league would not be able to do. They really have to hold their heads high with pride and know that two of our goals were pretty sloppy tonight. However a goal is a goal and I stand by the lads one hundred percent to say they deserved the victory tonight.

Carling Cup Third Round Preview

Youngsters relish a chance to impress

On monday evening Villa Park will be host to an already familiar occasion. A cup game. Aston Villa has so far played 11 cup games in all competitions, still failing to be defeated when it matters. And for a few of those games the line-up was a little different than usual. Manager Frozen has been experimenting with his cup squads, always including youngsters and making sure everyone stays happy at the club. Monday night's game against York City should be no different.

With the first team flying high in division 1, it's time for them to take a deserved rest and let the young guns do the work.

38911_1307807839.jpg32467_1285452589.jpg41857_1291984805.jpg41131_1288371940.jpg

Some of the biggest names in Villa's youth squad are, Albrighton,Camacho,Casnos and Clarke, who have played a crucial role in Villa's cup success thus far and they're all expected to play their part on monday again.

2334_1301170244.jpg29210_1298420009.jpg

Also expected to play are First team players Cesar, who has played every game so far, and Cissokho who has recently returned from an injury, although Martin Demichelis can play there too.

This is to fill the void left by Alvaro Dominguez who is still recovering from his 5 week injury.

34893_1272722298.jpg

Robert Lewandowski is another player who plays for the second team, but just like Dominguez he is injured, so we could see academy players like Harry Kane,Nicola Sansone or Dale Jennings involved up front.

49590_1303991152.jpg44740_1307538822.jpg46461_1288870167.jpg

All in all, although this team only has 23 players, and may look short of depth, it seems that they're managing just fine, and who knows, perhaps this is the new generation of the English Football elite?

sky-sports-news-ipad-app-logo.jpg

Leeds United In Buy out bid from Barhain Royal Family

ken-bates-sells-leeds-united.jpg

Bates Promised Two Camels and a house in Barhain as part of the deal.

Breaking News coming from Elland Road this afternoon suggests that Division two high flyers Leeds United are subject to a bid from the Royal Family of Barhain lead by Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mubarak al-Khalifa who tryed to buy the club back in late 2003 early 2004 when the club found themselves in serouis finacial trouble however the bid fell apart due to the club not trusting Mr Mubarak's bid at the time however it seems that now Mr Mubarak is keen to buy the club again after recieving backing from the rest of the Barhain Royal Family with the Royal Family looking to improve it's tarnished repuatation after Protests in the country turned Violent with troops turning on civillians and causing mass injury which lead to the Formula One Race in the country be prosponed. However since the violence in the country has cooled down it seems the Barhain Royal Family are looking to invest there fortune in a big Franchise in the United Kingdom to show that they still are in power and arn't as bad as the Media has made out however the Arab Spring effect on Barhain looks to be now quite forgotten in the west with the troubles in Libya and Eqypt the centre of Focus in the West. Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mubarak al-Khalifa who leads the £45 million pounds bid for the possible takeover is said to have confesed in the past of his love for british football and especially for Leeds United and has spoken in the past of his dream of seeing them relive the glory days. Mr Mubarak is apparently already in comunication with current Leeds Owner Ken Bates who is known for his tight pockets which will delighted Leeds United Fans who are said to be welcoming the bid from the Middle East. Mr Mubarak has had much to say in the past on Leeds United including these quotes when questioned back in 2003 by the BBC over a possible take over.He said:

"i have a passionate desire to re-awaken a sleeping giant."
"I fell in love with the club when I was 11 years old when Leeds played Chelsea in the 1970 FA Cup final.
"Leeds mean everything to me, I was born to support them.
"Those who are closest to me, my friends and my family, know what Leeds United mean to me."

74381955_ddc4936545.jpg

Will The Barhain Flag be flying over Elland Road ?

English Educated Sheikh Abdulrahman is said to be delighted with the way the bid is shaping up however it seems that Ken Bates is unlikley to want to sell all 100% of the club with the liklehood he'd only be willing to sell 75% which still leaves him with a say in how leeds will be run. Leeds Currently find themselves second in division two one point behind Leaders Millwall. recently appointed manager Aaron Duffy has had nothing to say on the suspected takeover as of yet and the players have also been asked not to comment to the media on the situation although it seems it wont be effecting the team on the pitch as they look to continue there unbeaten streak of seven games and keep pushing on towards promotion. Elland Road is oddly undeserted today normally on a monday night if theres no cup fixture theres no activity ouside the ground however thousands of fans have turned up to show there delight at the possible take over.

TheLillywhiteGazzette.png

Hard Fought Win For The Whites

Preston 2-1 Leicester City

TheLillywhiteGazzette.png

MarkVanBommel-1.jpg

Preston vice captain Mark Van Bommel bagged his second goal for the club

When these two sides meet it is never the easiest of games to win for either side, though in recent years we have seen some cracking goals within this tie. There was even a goal for former Preston number one, Andy Lonergan back in 2004 who booted the ball up field only to find it bounce over the clueless Leicester keeper and into the back of the net. Lonergan has made a stamp on Preston over the least couple of years and has stayed loyal to the club even when big teams such as Arsenal showed interest in the former England U21 keeper. Still, Newman is making his own mark on the side and has signed players that could fill also become future PNE legends. One of these new signings is Lillywhites captain Joey Barton, who arrived at Deepdale as Newman's first signing after a few years playing for Newcastle. He opened the scoring here with a perfectly hit volley with just two minutes of the match gone, though the foxes did claim the shot hit a fellow offside team mate on the way in. Replays showed the goal was correctly given. Leicester did get a goal back in this game though, slotting away a penalty that was awarded under controversial matters when foxes striker Kevin Mirallas went down following a tackle from Daniel Carrico. Defender Leandro Almeida slotted home the penalty to draw his side level with just under 25 minutes of the first half left. Though Preston did re take the lead during the second half, Dutch veteran Mark Van Bommel smashing home his second ever Preston goal from 25 yards out to give his side another 3 points.
Ben Newman

Another great win for the lads out there tonight which is definately what needs to keep happening going into these next couple of games. The upcoming fixtures will be the hardest so far this season but I believe my lads will pull through and carry on this good run of form. I would like to also just give a shout out to Mark Van Bommel, he showed why we payed so much for him out there tonight and recently he has started to feel a little home sick and was even thinking about taking a break and heading back to Holland for a few weeks. Though he has been brave and gathered up the nerves to get back out there which is something every footballer should admire when in a similar situation.

Can Wickham Keep Bothroyd Out Of Team?

After 13 games for Reading since he signed from Cardiff, Jay Bothroyd has got 6 goals and set up 7 many are saying he would be one of the best signings in the Championship bar he has not touched a ball for over 3 games and the star has said he is not happy with how coach Beckett has put all his faith in 18 year old Connor Wickham.

29 year old Bothroyd has said he has more to offer to Reading, yes he is near 30 now but he still has life in him, when he joined Reading everyone saw it as a good deal for Cardiff but since then Bothroyd has shown his power in the Championship but now Beckett has said 18 year old Wickham come before him and the ace ST has said he is not happy.

Bothroyd who is getting payed just under £19,000 a game has said the 18 year old who is on £12,000 is a good chose for English football, it is showing youths are coming threw the ranks but why has he been dropped in more shocking news he has said he has not talked to his coach in over a week and has not been payed.

Mr. Clifford opens account with win

Birmingham progressed into the 4th round of the English Shield last night with a expected win over Mansfield Town. They never made it easy however taking the Divison 1 side to pens after what can only be said as last ditch defending. Birmingham had 35 scoring chances to Mansfields 14 and Mr. Clifford pin point scoring goals as Birminghams weakness.

First Half

The Birmingham fans all turned out for Mr. Clifford's first game in charge after the borad decided to give him his first game 5 hours after signing his 4 year contract. Mansfield started the better against a 2nd string Birmingham side, However with Mr. Clifford urging his new team on they scored in the 17th minute. A perfect weighted through ball found G.CARRILLO who slotted the ball under the advancing keeper. 1-0 Birmingham

The first half passed by with out much talking points from that goal Mansfield giving up attacking play to soak up the Birmingham pressure.

Second Half

Mr. Clifford is famous for his half time talks, while it never paid of with a goal right after the restart it had the Players pumped and ready. Birmingham put together great passing play time and time again only to find 10-men behind the ball. However on 66 minutes a bit of magic from Timo GEBHART sent the Birmingham fans wild, He picked up the ball for the half way line danced past Mansfields on coming defenders and smashed the ball home. 2-0 Birmingham

The fans fully expected a easy passage and more goals going into the next round. But Mansfield had other ideas with a reply jsut 4 minutes later Maik RODENBERG lost his marker and thumped a low shot under the keeper game back on ? Birmingham 2-1 Mansfield Town

Only a small away gathering could be heard form then as Mansfield tradded their defending for attacking, and with 4 minutes left Júnior FERNÁNDEZ darted past the defenders and finished smartly. Birmingham 2-2 Mansfield town

Extra Time + Penaltys

Both side's gave it their all in the 90minutes, and so it was no shock to see sloppy boring play in Extra time. Each side had chances from set plays but neither took them and by the Second Half of extra time it looked as each had settled for a pentaly shoot out.

Birmingham stepped it up and showed their steel in the shoot out, Scoring 3 of their 4 pens while Mansfield saw their 3 saved and put over.

Birminghams winning penalty

Mr. Clifford

They put up a fight. Even i at 2-0 expect at least another goal or just a easy 20 minutes left were my lads could just pass it around. It was my first game credit to the lads i had my way of doing things and they had the last mangers way. Scoring was the problem 35 shots and just 2 goals, while im happy thats not the first teams stats i would like a better showing from my youth as some might earn starts under me. But overall its progress and were into the next round and thats what we wanted last night.

North End Smash The Rams!

Derby County 0-3 PNE

Mandzukic-1.png

Mandzukic added another goal to his Preston tally

Preston came into this game on the back of three straight wins and confidence was high as they faced Derby at Pride Park. Though games like these hardly ever go to plan and in recent years, Derby away has always been a fixture the whites have wanted to get over and done with. This time around the whites were flying in the championship and with recent performances going their way you could definately see them picking up atleast a point up here today. Early domination from the team from Lancashire saw in form striker Mario Mandzukic give them the lead through a driven left footed shot that gave the keeper no chance of saving. Derby continued to struggle during the first half and went even further behind although they were unlucky with this goal. However Gojko Kacar won't see it that way as he netted his first ever goal for Preston, though it may not have been a memorable goal for the fans, it was certainly a memorable goal for the big Serbian himself.

The second half saw Preston still keeping the game one sided, though Derby almost got back in the game when Luke Varney's shot hit the under side of the crossbar but unluckily fell right into the hands of lillywhites keeper Alan McGregor. Thing's seemed to calm down until the last 10 minutes of the game where we saw Preston extend the lead even further. This goal coming from on loan Blackburn winger Guillaume Francois who used his lightning quick pace to cut inside and lash home the ball from 15 yards to hand Preston all three points.

Four wins in four games is a record I think the lads should look at with pride! 2 weeks ago we were getting beat at home to the likes of Barnsley and Northampton, though I'm not trying to cause any offense to either of those sides and their managers. But it just comes to show how a matter of weeks can make a teams season a lot more exciting. Right now where having a blast, nothing could knock our spirits, yet at the same time we know deep down that we need to keep our focus on upcoming fixtures and not make any silly mistakes while the celebrations are on going. Still, the team deserve to be in this position so until Tuesday night they can party all they like.
