Mr. Clifford opens account with win

Birmingham progressed into the 4th round of the English Shield last night with a expected win over Mansfield Town. They never made it easy however taking the Divison 1 side to pens after what can only be said as last ditch defending. Birmingham had 35 scoring chances to Mansfields 14 and Mr. Clifford pin point scoring goals as Birminghams weakness.

First Half

The Birmingham fans all turned out for Mr. Clifford's first game in charge after the borad decided to give him his first game 5 hours after signing his 4 year contract. Mansfield started the better against a 2nd string Birmingham side, However with Mr. Clifford urging his new team on they scored in the 17th minute. A perfect weighted through ball found G.CARRILLO who slotted the ball under the advancing keeper. 1-0 Birmingham

The first half passed by with out much talking points from that goal Mansfield giving up attacking play to soak up the Birmingham pressure.

Second Half

Mr. Clifford is famous for his half time talks, while it never paid of with a goal right after the restart it had the Players pumped and ready. Birmingham put together great passing play time and time again only to find 10-men behind the ball. However on 66 minutes a bit of magic from Timo GEBHART sent the Birmingham fans wild, He picked up the ball for the half way line danced past Mansfields on coming defenders and smashed the ball home. 2-0 Birmingham

The fans fully expected a easy passage and more goals going into the next round. But Mansfield had other ideas with a reply jsut 4 minutes later Maik RODENBERG lost his marker and thumped a low shot under the keeper game back on ? Birmingham 2-1 Mansfield Town

Only a small away gathering could be heard form then as Mansfield tradded their defending for attacking, and with 4 minutes left Júnior FERNÁNDEZ darted past the defenders and finished smartly. Birmingham 2-2 Mansfield town

Extra Time + Penaltys

Both side's gave it their all in the 90minutes, and so it was no shock to see sloppy boring play in Extra time. Each side had chances from set plays but neither took them and by the Second Half of extra time it looked as each had settled for a pentaly shoot out.

Birmingham stepped it up and showed their steel in the shoot out, Scoring 3 of their 4 pens while Mansfield saw their 3 saved and put over.

Birminghams winning penalty

Mr. Clifford

They put up a fight. Even i at 2-0 expect at least another goal or just a easy 20 minutes left were my lads could just pass it around. It was my first game credit to the lads i had my way of doing things and they had the last mangers way. Scoring was the problem 35 shots and just 2 goals, while im happy thats not the first teams stats i would like a better showing from my youth as some might earn starts under me. But overall its progress and were into the next round and thats what we wanted last night.

Mr. Clifford pleased with point

Birmingham held Chelsea 1-1 at St Andrews last night in Mr. Clifford's second game as manager. Birmingham were the underdog's despite having the home advantage, However the first team playing Under Clifford for the first time put in a shift and produced the goods when needed.

First Half

Both keepers were forced into early saves as Birmingham and Chelsea pushed for a early goal. Cech was called into action first rushing of his line to clsoe the angle for the on coming Cassano. Chelsea responded minutes later Ronaldo forcing Stekelenburg into a finger tip save !

Both teams seemed to have taken note of the early attacks slightly slowing things down passing the ball well. A fairly boring first half as both teams went into the break 0-0 mainly thanks to their keepers.

Second Half

Mr. Clifford is well known for his half time talks and already he is starting to prove why... As Birmingham scored from the restart Cassano took the whole chelsea Midfield and Defence by surprise sprinting straight towards goal from the kick of before laying it of to supporting Tosic who cooly rounded Cech and side footed it into a empty net. Birmingham 1-0 Chelsea

Mr. Clifford and the St. Andrews faithful were impressed, No one had given them a chance yet they were winning 1-0, The Chelsea pressure increased as expected and it payed of in the 65th minute. Robben jumped higher then everyone else from a Chelsea corner and nodded home past a rooted Birmingham keeper. 1-1

Chelsea smelt blood late on making changes, But Birmingham held out for a fair point.

Mr. Clifford

The draw was a fair result. Its a very good point we were up against a excellent team on paper and it can be a little danuting on the other side, But we stood up to the test produced some good football at times and stuck in there. While a postive result saw us slip to 17th the quality and football is there to pull us out of a protential relagation battle.

Mr. Clifford talks over targets with Board

Today Mr. Clifford met with the Birmingham board to talk over possible targets and deals, While Mr. Clifford has publicly given the thumbs up on the quality his side has its reported he want's players he's worked with before and knows better.

Man in demand Wickham

Wickham is currently a man being watch closely buy a reported 9 club's. Rumor has it Wickham would prefer a move to Birmingham though its unknown what team in Birmingham he want's to join as Aston Villa are also interested. Mr. Clifford was impressed with Wickham and had the chance to watch him up close in a friendly between Birmingham and Reading in which Wickham scored.

Mr. Clifford

I never like to talk about possible transfer targets, We respect the player and the club the player plays for. We also respect our fans and it would be unfair to raise their hopes. We are aware of the Wickham situation were he stands on his current contract.

3-1

Mr. Clifford delighted as Blues take their chances

Birmingham won their first league game under Mr. Clifford tonight at St. Andrews to push away from the drop zone. The defence is still a concern for Mr. Clifford but there was plenty of positives taken from the game.Up next for Birmingham in the league is shock table topping West Brom.

First Half

Sunderland started of the brighter knowing a loss could see them go bottom. It was almost a 6 pointer and this early into the season it was one neither team could afford to lose. However it was Birmingham who took the lead, Keita slipped in well before a good first touch sent him away from his market form 10 yards out there was no question.1-0 Birmingham

Sunderland knew the they had to step it up, They did just that in the 31st Minute. Scherrer MAXWELL darting run past the defenders left the keeper with no choice but to come out Maxwell with the cheeky chip saw sunderland climb back level.1-1

Mr. Clifford felt Birmingham deserved the lead going into the second half so he gave the order for out right attack. 3 minutes before the half time whistle it payed of, CASSANO with a powerful shot saw the ball deflected into the goal. 2-1 Birmingham

Second Half

Mr. Clifford had his players pumped up ready for the second half and 2-1, Soon became 3-1 after Birmingham's first attack of the Second half. Cassano once again finding the space and time in the box to chest the ball down form a wiped in cross and cooly smash home his second goal of the game. 3-1 Birmingham

Mr. Clifford then gave the order and Birmingham gave out a lesson in how to pass the ball around and run down the clock with minimum effort. They restricted sunderland to long shots from 20,30 yards which Stekelenburg galdly let sail over his goal.

Mr. Clifford

It was a great result tonight for the teams moral. We've been playing good football all season but yet find our selfs around the bottom half of the table. I hope iv taken the shackles of a bit and have given them the freedom to enjoy their football with smiles on their faces. While we still need eyes in the back of our heads we can now start to think of putting results together and break into the top 10.
